Ants are the most successful of all the social insects, a group that also includes social wasps and bees. Ants make colonies and have inhabited the warmer areas of the Earth for over 100 million years. Their numbers are uncountable and it has been estimated that at any one time there are at least 1 quadrillion living ants today. Ants are remarkably adaptive and are found almost everywhere.

Ants have an elaborate system of communication, which includes visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory, and olfactory signals. Olfactory communication is achieved through the release of chemicals called pheromones, which allow ants to signal alarm, lay trails, and attract sister workers to new food sources.
